A second wave?

If you have been reading the news lately, you would have noticed that over the next few months

there is a likelihood of a second wave. It has been suggested that people are “not taking the virus seriously enough” and have “relaxed far too much”.

Can this be said for the cleaning industry? Have we let our guard down too? Is there more we could do or could have done?

The question of doing more has to be one almost entirely focused on money. Cleaning has never been one of those services that received an increase in budget each year. In fact, quite the opposite. It was typically first on the list of cutbacks. Contractors were in turn under pressure to make their margins. Restructures and redundancies were commonplace post-go-live in a fight to deliver the service the client had signed up to.

I have been a client in a previous role and always ensured where possible I did not reduce cleaning or housekeeping hours. In fact, I increased them. Enhancing the guest experience, overall cleanliness, ensuring we never stood still, and were always in a position to deliver the highest quality service for our guests was the reason for the increase.

How can we encourage companies to look at other cost-saving measures instead of always focusing on cleaning hours first? Why is cleaning and its associated services always first on the list of cost cuts? It is time that stopped. If indeed there is a second wave coming, the industry will once again have to come to the rescue.
