Over the past seven months, business in the United Kingdom and the world over have had to adapt and change. The day to day business operating models were reviewed, sometimes thrown out and started again from scratch to allow them to survive and operate in a COVID world. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen the virus go away, nor the infection rates disappear, and this situation may stay with us for the foreseeable future.
I have been thinking about what the future holds for the cleaning industry and where will it find itself in another six months, or even a year. Some organisations are reviewing times and ways in which their cleaning is being carried out. Traditionally, the majority of cleaning fell outside of the working hours and into the night, and in turn, the cleaning operatives were an unseen workforce. When we arrived at our place of work each morning whether it was an office, school, or retail outlet, it would be clean and tidy. We are now seeing an ever-increasing cleaning presence during the working hours, day and night. People want to see the cleaning operatives proactively cleaning areas, sanitising surfaces, and leaving us feeling safer in our environments.
The shift in approach also includes organisations reviewing their cleaning products and equipment they use. We have seen innovative cleaning machines introduced into the market place and an ever-increasing presence and refinement of robotic machinery too. The choice of cleaning products is also changing with an option to choose something that is more environmentally friendly, safer to use; the-chemical free approach. There has been a buzz around the excellent results achieved with probiotic cleaning and the use of probiotics as an alternative to chemicals. Some exciting technologies indeed! What fascinates me about the cleaning industry is that there is always something new to learn, some new way of delivering services through technology, innovation and sometimes necessity as is the case with COVID-19.
So what does the future hold for our industry? The truth is that no one knows, but it looks like an exciting journey of discovery, innovation and breakthroughs, and I am very much looking forward to it.
